Detroit Diesel began with a bold GM bet in 1938: build compact, high-speed diesels that could beat gasoline on efficiency and durability. The two-stroke Series 71 became a wartime workhorse in landing craft and the M4A2’s twin-engine powerpack, then a peacetime staple for buses, trucks, boats, and heavy equipment. The “Screamin’ Jimmy” sound turned into a calling card as these engines spread across North America. Through the 50s and 60s the lineup expanded with the 53 and 110 series, and by the 70s Detroit Diesel faced new pressure from fuel costs and emissions. The Series 92 aimed to claw back efficiency, but regulation kept tightening. The real pivot came with the four-stroke, electronically controlled Series 60 in 1987, which reset expectations on power, economy, and diagnostics and took a huge share of the Class 8 market. Corporate shifts followed. GM spun Detroit Diesel into a Penske joint venture, then Daimler brought it under the Freightliner umbrella and later rebranded the portfolio as “Detroit,” adding transmissions and axles alongside modern engines like the DD13, DD15, and DD16.
