Video Description
In 1950, Baldwin and Westinghouse unveiled the experimental No. 4000 “Blue Goose,” a 4,000 hp gas-turbine electric that promised jet-age power on American rails. Demo runs on the PRR, MKT, and C&NW showed smooth continuous power through traction motors and a striking modern look that seemed ready to challenge diesel-electrics. Real-world freight duty exposed the flaws. Part-load fuel burn was ugly, throttle response lagged, hot-section parts wore fast, and extreme noise and heat made shop work miserable. Residual fuel oil sounded cheap on paper but created maintenance headaches. The turbine’s complexity never fit railroad practice or budgets. Union Pacific’s big GTEL fleet later proved the point at scale: huge horsepower, poor economics. Diesel-electrics won with better idle thrift, instant torque, simpler service, and standardized parts. This video explains how a turbine locomotive works, why Brayton-cycle advantages failed in freight service, and why diesel-electrics kept the crown. #baldwin-westinghouse #bluegoose --------- We do not fully own the material compiled in this video.
