The HORRORS of AK-47 This video covers the complete history of the AK-47, from Mikhail Kalashnikov's early life as the 17th of 19 children born to peasant parents, through his wounding as a tank commander at the Battle of Bryansk in 1941, to the hospital recovery where he first began thinking about rifle design after listening to Soviet soldiers complain about their weapons. We explain the German STG-44 and its 7.92x33mm intermediate cartridge that influenced Soviet thinking, and how the Soviets developed their own 7.62x39mm round in response. The video covers Operation Osoaviakhim in 1946 when Soviet forces relocated over 2,000 German engineers and scientists including Hugo Schmeisser, designer of the STG-44, to Soviet manufacturing centers. You'll learn exactly what makes the AK so reliable, including the intentionally loose tolerances between moving parts, the long-stroke gas piston system with 50 percent longer stroke than necessary, the chrome-lined barrel and chamber, and the tapered cartridge case that creates the distinctive curved magazine shape.
