Martial law was declared, demonstrations were fired upon, and thousands of people were killed. Hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets wearing shrouds and digging their own graves to show that they were not afraid of the Shah's bullets. Many proposals for compromise were put forward to save the Shah’s power. However, neither the angry people in the streets nor Khomeini, who had become the movement's powerful political leader, had any intention of stepping back. In the end, it was not the people who stepped back, but the army. The Shah was defeated and forced to leave the country, never to return. On February 1, 1979, when Khomeini returned from 15 years in exile, millions of people greeted him at the airport with the slogan “You are our soul, Khomeini.” On February 11, Iranian Radio announced: “This is the voice of Iran... The voice of the real Iran...” The revolution had triumphed. And the revolution was not just a governmental change; it was the moment when the people took control of their own destiny for the first time.
