Marcello’s Oboe Concerto is one of the best-loved and most performed works in the instrument’s repertoire. Originally written in C minor, it is heard here in its D minor transcription by J.S. Bach, who clearly appreciated the work’s special qualities. With its astonishingly sophisticated use of melody and harmony for its time, its lyrical and graceful outer movements and the exquisitely beautiful central Adagio that has made it so famous, this work is widely regarded as Marcello’s finest masterpiece. This collection also includes Marcello’s six concertos published under the collective title La Cetra. These works stand at the threshold between late Baroque and emerging Classical aesthetics, combining formal clarity with expressive freedom and a rich variety of instrumental color. The concertos reveal Marcello as a composer of refinement and imagination, capable of great lyricism as well as energetic brilliance. *Alessandro Marcello: A Venetian nobleman, poet, philosopher, and amateur composer, Alessandro Marcello (1669–1747) moved in the intellectual circles of his time and published much of his music under the Arcadian Academy pseudonym Eterio Stinfalico. Though not a professional musician, his output displays remarkable craftsmanship and originality. The present performances by the acclaimed early music ensemble Insieme Strumentale di Roma bring out the full expressive range, elegance, and stylistic nuance of these exceptional works. *Benedetto Marcello: A prominent Venetian aristocrat, Benedetto Marcello (1686–1739) was not only a composer but also a jurist, poet, and music theorist. He is especially remembered for his satirical treatise Il teatro alla moda, a sharp critique of contemporary operatic practices. His music reflects the cosmopolitan spirit of the early 18th century, blending Italian lyricism with broader European influences. This recording embraces that aesthetic, combining Italian-style ornamentation with select French embellishments in the spirit of Les Goûts réunis. Benedetto Marcello’s Six Sonatas for Cello and Basso Continuo survive in two nearly identical sources: a London edition published by I. Walsh and a Dutch edition issued anonymously, both dating from around 1732.
