Deep in the forests of western Poland, overgrown in moss and leaves, lie several massive concrete ruins, the broken remnants of Adolf Hitler’s once formidable East Prussian military headquarters: the Wolfsschanze– or Wolf’s Lair. In the summer of 1944, this was the beating heart of the German war machine engaged in an increasingly desperate struggle against the Allied powers. And it was here, on July 20th, 1944, where a young German colonel Claus von Stauffenberg attempted the unthinkable: assassinating Adolf Hitler.
