Lost in the desert, a man contemplates where his dead body could be discovered. A search helicopter had flown past, failing to spot him in the scorching heat. Burning his clothes, sleeping bag, even his backpack to try and signal anyone, he was left utterly alone. He hasn't had any water, food or shelter for days. He writes a note to his wife, abandoning all hope. His eyes close and the night passes. To his surprise, he awoke the very next day, his body having refused to let him die. The average human can survive 8-21 days without food. Without water, you can only live 3-4 days before succumbing to thirst.
