Crews knew the odds: six-pounder rounds bounced from its 100-millimeter armor, while its 88-millimeter gun cracked open Churchills at two kilometers. In three months of desert combat, nothing had stopped a Tiger. The men trying to take Hill Point 174 knew this. Still, infantry PIATs hurled their pathetic charges against 57 tons of German steel. Shaped charges detonated and vanished. A single Tiger kept climbing the ridge, unfazed. It was single-handedly holding the Allied advance. British Churchills crested the slope, guns hammering. Shells sparked and ricocheted harmlessly. The Tiger's barrel swung toward them; another slaughter was coming. The Allies fired a desperate volley. Through the dust and smoke, they saw the Tiger's turret freeze mid-turn. There was no explosion.
