On June 28, 1914, Gavrilo Princip, a 19-year-old Bosnian Serb nationalist, assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand on a Sarajevo streetcorner. This event ultimately triggered the outbreak of World War I. You may have heard that the only reason Princip was in the right place to kill the Archduke was because he stepped into a deli to get a sandwich at a lucky moment. The story actually isn't true, but it's widely believed and often repeated, especially on the internet, as if it is. In this video we'll examine the sandwich myth, how we know that it's most likely untrue, how and exactly when it got into Franz Ferdinand assassination lore, and why setting the record straight matters.
