Currently, the tallest known tree in Oregon is the Brummit Fir (aka the Doerner Fir), a 327-foot Douglas fir giant in Coos County. But as scientists use LiDAR technology to map more and more of the state’s landscape, they are finding tall trees no one knew about in remote locations — trees that could be even taller than the Brummit. In this story from 2017, champion tree climbers Brian French and Will Koomjian from Ascending the Giants, a voluntary group of tree enthusiasts, use those findings to head deep into the forest, where they climb some of the trees LiDAR identified to see if they might take the crown for the tallest tree in Oregon.
