They were smaller than his F-105 Thunderchief, weighing roughly half as much. Still, they were heavily armed with a set of missiles locked on his tail. Tomes slammed the throttle, his entire body pushing against his seat as his aircraft tore through the sky at nearly twice the speed of sound. Soviet-made jets would have been outpaced by now, but when the Captain glanced to his flanks, the predators were still there. The last image Tomes ever saw was the white-hot flash of a missile flying straight toward him.
