Florian Gadsby is a ceramicist working with stoneware and porcelain in North London — here you'll find videos that show process, how pottery is thrown and finished and finally glazed and kiln fired. The videos here show the processes behind his work, such as the throwing and trimming of tableware and more sculptural pieces. For more regular posts, including daily photographs and videos, make sure to follow over on my Instagram: (www.instagram.com/floriangadsby). I restock my online shop around 3/4 times a year, with about 300-400 pieces a time, if you'd like to receive a newsletter about when these go live you can sign up to my newsletter on my website, (https://www.floriangadsby.com/newsletter). I also leave the shop page online, even though it appears as sold out, it usually sells out in a few minutes time, just to give you an idea of what's available and the price range, (https://www.floriangadsby.com/shop). If there's anything else you'd like to know, please do get in touch!

Video Description
These tiny jars are finicky pots to trim, it’s a bit of a process of finding a gemstone from a rock, by which I mean, the parts are admittedly thrown rough, (the lid especially), and it takes trimming them back to find the more refined vessel inside. I won’t deny the fact that I hate throwing the lids for these. They’re small, fingertip-made pots and I’d rather throw each in a matter of seconds, irregularly, rather than spending much longer throwing absolutely perfectly formed lids, which I’m only going to have to turn back significantly anyway. So yes, they’re rushed, and need a bit of fixing here and there to get them spinning evenly. I also have a habit of letting these parts turn too firm before trimming them, which I can’t stand! The last two batches of 30 have been trimmed on the firmer side of leather hard, which makes what’s normally a joyous process, into a scratchy, dusty ordeal, especially when refining the thinly thrown body of the jar. That’s the other hard part, balancing the dryness of the lid and the body, as they dry at vastly different rates and need a keen eye kept on them at all times as they’re slowly kept exposed to the air to turn leather hard. Often the body sections are wrapped up before the lids, which, as they’re so thick, need to ample time flipped upside-down so the thick expanse of stoneware has enough time to dry out into a usable state. #pottery #jar #howto #trimming #satisfying #studiopottery #ceramics
