Far from any battlefield, five Americans crouched in the shadows, their faces streaked with black polish, and their breaths measured. Under the faint glow of a red-lensed flashlight, Engineman 3rd Class Hatfield’s hands worked methodically, connecting wires to a crude pressure switch.
