just past 1:00am on July 23, 1945. the men of USS Barb had infiltrated the Japanese Home Islands. Near Hokkaido, save for the faint hum of insects in the still night air. the countryside was silent. Far from any battlefield, five Americans crouched in the shadows, their faces streaked with black polish, and their breaths measured. Under the faint glow of a red-lensed flashlight, Engineman 3rd Class Hatfield’s hands worked methodically, connecting wires to a crude pressure switch. But that night, their target wasn’t a ship, a convoy, or even a port. These American submariners were here to destroy a train.
