Her eyes widen, but Jaime beckons her to follow him to the White Sword Tower. As they hurry up the steps, Jaime watches the doorway, hearing voices behind them. He finds a squad of Lannister men-at-arms approaching, led by Ser Amory and Gregor. The Mountain: Ser Jaime. We are searching for the princess and her children. Have you seen them? Jaime: Yes, I have already arrested them so you need not worry about that. Mountain: Our task is not to arrest them. Step aside so we can complete it. The giant attempts to brush past him, but Jaime blocks his path, one hand reaching down for his sword. Ser Amory pales and Gregor growls and reaches over his shoulder to grab his greatsword. Jaime: I’m afraid it is. You see, my job is to protect the king and his family. That includes his grandchildren. So you see the problem if I let you pass. Gregor: You are playing a dangerous game, Lannister. Your father will hear of this. Jaime: Perhaps, but it is him I answer to, not you. Now if you truly have your blood boiling, I will be glad to indulge you. However, I think even a bull like you understands what Lord Tywin will do if you lay a finger on me. You’re strong, I’ll grant you. But are you strong enough to take on every man in his army? For a moment, it seems like the Mountain might risk this confrontation. He growls and grips the hilt of his sword. Behind him, the rest of his men step back while Jaime gets into a fighting position. And then, he growls and releases his blade, turning and stalking off. Ser Amory follows suit with Jaime calling after them that Elia is under his protection and should something happen to her or her children, he will know who is responsible. He only lets them out once Robert Baratheon arrives in the capital with his forces. By that time, Tywin has learned about his son's actions and is furious. But he finds an unexpected ally in Ned Stark who bars the way and prevents any Lannister solider from getting close to the tower. It is a tense situation that nearly escalates into violence, but remains civil. By the time Jaime escorts them into the throne room, Tywin, Robert, and Ned are waiting for him. Tywin: Explain your foolishness, Jaime. Now. Jaime: I…simply thought that our fearless leader, Robert Baratheon would like the honors of striking the final blow. He pulls his longsword from his scabbard and tosses it to the ground. The other’s eyes widen in surprise at the gesture, especially Robert whose eyes flash with fury at the challenge. But he does not move to pick it up. Instead, he stares at the trio. Elia Martell clings to her children tightly. There is no defiance in her, no challenge. Simply fears for herself and her children. Jaime can see Robert’s resolve crumble. He can see the emotions war in him, but one thought becomes clear. Heroes don’t kill children. Slowly, Robert sinks back to his throne and sighs.
