16-Year-Old Boy Gets Life In Prison, No Parole For Fatal Shooting

A 16-year-old boy in Wisconsin will spend the rest of his life in prison for a shooting in 2023 that killed a man and injured several others. Parise Larry was sentenced on Friday (December 19) by Judge Laura Lavey in Fond du Lac County Circuit Court. His convictions include first-degree intentional homicide for the fatal shooting of Tatyanna Zech, 20, who was shot when Larry and his friend Antonio Johnston, who was 17 at the time, opened fire at another teenager. Larry's sentencing was interrupted when people in the gallery began shouting and confronting each other when a microphone was being passed around the gallery so people could talk about how the crimes affected them. After the hearing resumed, Larry said he wanted "to start off by saying 'I'm sorry' to the victim's family for causing the death of their family member." "I'm going to take responsibility for everything that's in this case, and I just want to say sorry to my family and to their family. I hope everybody can forgive me," the boy said. Judge Lavey said Larry's convictions are "a plethora of some of the most serious charges anyone could be facing." "Not only did people die, or a person died, multiple people were injured. Multiple people were put at risk of losing their life or otherwise being seriously injured," the judge said. She noted that a young boy rode a scooter under the gunfire. "He's just out, looks like, having a good time as he's riding that scooter. He rides it directly under the shooting for Mr. Johnston and Mr. Larry," Lavey said. "That little boy should not have to grow up thinking that type of behavior, that risk, these circumstances, are in any way, shape or form normal. Because they're not." She said she recognizes "that Mr. Larry is very young." His lawyer argued that he's so immature that when gunfire broke out "he essentially based on his immaturity and his lack of development, fired back right." "He wasn't able, in the heat of the moment, to make the right choice that perhaps an adult could make," the judge said. But the jury rejected self defense when they convicted Larry, and Judge Lavey said evidence shows Larry wanted a confrontation. Lavey said the boy has continued to "engage in assaultive behavior" since his arrest. "Again, is that a product of his youth, or is it a fundamental project of his character, such that it gives the court additional concern for public safety?
