Video Description
Support me on Patreon to be entered into giveaways, get BTS with me in the shop, voice reveals, and much more: https://patreon.com/davidadamsen After the devastating Maui fires in 2023 destroyed my client’s home, he salvaged two chunks of rare Hawaiian Kiawe wood (also known as Hawaiian mesquite) for me to transform into something special. You might remember a past video where I turned a smaller piece from the same species — well, this time the challenge was even greater. Watch me turn Hawaiian Kiawe for the first time: https://youtu.be/VYCaPWxXNEg?si=WwwqanTPxj_fcucA This project was a full end-grain woodturning from start to finish, with extremely splintery grain and deep cracks that made every cut risky. My freshly sharpened 5/8" bowl gouge was the only tool that handled the job well. Carbide tools kept catching, causing belt slips, and I couldn’t risk increasing lathe speed due to balance issues and safety concerns. To stabilize the piece and prevent staining, I used @TotalBoat penetrating epoxy and black CA glue —multiple times! Despite all the challenges, the final result came better than I had hoped, without any catastrophic failures. Thanks for watching this video! If you want to support what I do, please check out my website https://www.adamsenwoodcraft.com/, where I am taking by the horns the bull that is having an online store and developing merch like t-shirts, hoodies, hats, mugs and more, which gives you the option to buy something that you'll love and use while also supporting me, all without breaking the bank.
