You might remember a past video where I turned a smaller piece from the same species — well, this time the challenge was even greater. Watch me turn Hawaiian Kiawe for the first time: https://youtu.be/VYCaPWxXNEg?si=WwwqanTPxj_fcucA This project was a full end-grain woodturning from start to finish, with extremely splintery grain and deep cracks that made every cut risky. My freshly sharpened 5/8" bowl gouge was the only tool that handled the job well. Carbide tools kept catching, causing belt slips, and I couldn’t risk increasing lathe speed due to balance issues and safety concerns. To stabilize the piece and prevent staining, I used @TotalBoat penetrating epoxy and black CA glue —multiple times! Despite all the challenges, the final result came better than I had hoped, without any catastrophic failures. Thanks for watching this video!
