MIT economist David Autor explains key insights from his recent paper, which finds that 60% of the work we do today didn't exist in 1940. New technology can either automate work (displacing workers) or augment work (creating new tasks and boosting employment). But over the last 40 years, this balance has been tilted toward automation. David Autor is the Daniel (1972) and Gail Rubinfeld Professor in the MIT Department of Economics, and Co-Director of the MIT Shaping the Future of Work Initiative.
