PART ONE can be found here: https://youtu.be/-Ole6K1quDs Part One covered how Sweden built a Mach 2 interceptor with fewer people than London. Part Two is where things got interesting. By 1960, Sweden had Draken operational. Sort of. The early variants had proven the double-delta worked, but getting it safely into squadron service? That meant learning some hard lessons. Sometimes fatal ones. The ejection seats that trapped pilots inside falling aircraft got redesigned after two deaths in three months. The control systems that froze at high speed got fixed after killing two pilots in a single training sortie. Swedish engineers figured out how to bolt American Falcon missiles onto their own radar systems and created an interceptor that could hunt Soviet bombers silently, tracking targets by heat signature alone, with no radar emissions to give away their position. Then there's the David and Filip variants that actually became Sweden's backbone for twenty years. The export customers, Denmark running NATO strike missions, Finland walking a tightrope between East and West, Late 1980s, Paris Air Show. Soviet test pilot Viktor Pugachev demonstrates the Cobra manoeuvre, nose snapping violently upward, aircraft hanging on its tail, then falling through and recovering. Aviation press loses its mind. This is apparently a Soviet breakthrough in post-stall aerodynamics, something Western fighters can't do. Meanwhile in Sweden, test pilots who'd been flying Drakens for nearly thirty years are watching this with... let's call it polite interest.
