Born from the early Cold War obsession with speed, altitude, and the next big breakthrough, the Lockheed F-104 Starfighter looked more like something fired from a silo than flown from a runway. Designed by the legendary Kelly Johnson and Lockheed’s Skunk Works, the Starfighter was meant to give American pilots the edge in Korea, arriving too late but went on to shatter altitude & speed records. But the F-104’s legacy is a complicated one. While it dazzled with raw performance, it was unforgiving to fly, vulnerable to political compromise, and hamstrung by systems that weren’t quite ready for the kind of war it was being thrown into. It lacked advanced radar, struggled in multi-role environments, and earned nicknames like “Widowmaker” in some circles — especially in export countries where doctrine and design clashed hard.
