But here's the thing—Britain's first operational jet bomber was designed by a company better known for building locomotives and refrigerators, developed by a team of young engineers working out of a Preston garage, and went on to become one of the most successful military aircraft in history. She set multiple world records, served in more air forces than you can count, was built under license by the Americans, fought wars on nearly every continent, and 75 years after her first flight, she's STILL flying for NASA. This is Part One of a three-part series on the English Electric Canberra. In this episode, we're covering the design and development story—how a brilliant but eccentric designer named Teddy Petter and his team of engineers built Britain's answer to the jet age from scratch. We'll dig into the reasoning behind that distinctive straight wing, the issues with the tail design, the Avon engine drama that nearly killed the program, and the organisational warfare between Preston and Warton that almost tore everything apart.
