Video Description

Herbert Böttcher was one of the most brutal SS and Police Leaders operating in the General Government during the Holocaust. Born in 1907 in Prökuls (today Klaipėda), he rose quickly through the structures of Nazi Germany, joining the Nazi Party and the SS just months after Hitler annexed the Memel Territory. Trained as a lawyer, Böttcher used his education not to uphold justice, but to execute terror across occupied Poland. After the German invasion of Poland in September 1939, Böttcher became Police President in Kassel and later, in May 1942, the SS and Police Leader of the Radom District—one of the most persecuted regions of the Nazi-controlled General Government. As tens of thousands of Jews were forced into the Radom ghettos, Böttcher issued ruthless orders: if a Jewish person or a weapon was found in a Polish home, the entire household—including children—was to be executed and the property burned. His policies were designed to destroy solidarity, isolate Jewish communities, and terrorize the Polish population into submission. Under Operation Reinhard—the Nazi plan to exterminate the Jews of occupied Poland—Böttcher personally oversaw mass deportations from Radom to Treblinka. In August 1942 alone, he organized the liquidation of both ghettos, sending more than 28,000 men, women, and children to their deaths. Those found hiding were shot or burned alive; over 1,000 people were murdered on the streets during the liquidation itself. He later participated in anti-partisan campaigns, including the Michniów massacre, where 204 villagers were killed in retaliation for resistance activity. Captured after the war by the British, Herbert Böttcher was extradited to Poland, tried for war crimes, and sentenced to death in 1949. He was hanged on 12 June 1950 at age 43—one of thousands of Nazi perpetrators brought to justice. His legacy is one of terror, cruelty, and the systematic destruction of human life.
