Irma Grese became one of the most notorious female perpetrators of the Holocaust. Serving as an SS guard at Auschwitz-Birkenau and later at Bergen-Belsen, she embodied the cruelty of the Nazi camp system and the role women played within it. Born in Germany in 1923, Grese grew up during the rise of Nazism and joined the SS camp service while still a teenager. After training at Ravensbrück, she was transferred in 1943 to Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest extermination complex in Nazi-occupied Europe. There, she supervised female prisoner labor details, participated in selections for the gas chambers, and became known among inmates for relentless violence and sadism. Survivors described routine beatings, shootings, the use of attack dogs, and deliberate humiliation of prisoners. Grese later followed the evacuation of Auschwitz during the death marches and arrived at Bergen-Belsen in early 1945. By that time, the camp was collapsing under starvation, disease, and mass death. Even in the final weeks before liberation, witnesses testified that Grese continued abusing prisoners while thousands died around her. After the camp’s liberation by British forces, Grese was arrested and put on trial during the Belsen Trial in 1945. Survivors gave extensive testimony describing her actions at both Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen. Despite denying responsibility for killings, she was convicted of war crimes and crimes against humanity. Irma Grese was executed by hanging in December 1945 at the age of 22, making her one of the youngest women executed under British law in the twentieth century. This documentary examines Irma Grese’s biography, her role within the SS camp system, the experiences of survivors who encountered her, and the broader context of female guards in Nazi concentration camps. It is a reminder of how ordinary individuals became agents of mass violence within the machinery of the Holocaust.
