Video Description

Hendrik “Henk” Feldmeijer was one of the most fanatical Dutch collaborators of the Second World War — a man whose total loyalty to Nazi ideology made him one of the most feared figures in the occupied Netherlands. Born in 1910, Feldmeijer began as a promising student, but his ambitions shifted dramatically when he embraced the ideas of the National Socialist Movement (NSB). By 1932 he was among its earliest members, quickly rising through the ranks with his powerful oratory, strict discipline, and growing fascination with Germanic racial ideology. After the German invasion of the Netherlands in May 1940, Feldmeijer’s long-standing contacts with the SS paid off. Heinrich Himmler and Hanns Albin Rauter personally selected him to help establish the Dutch SS, an organization designed to recruit Dutch men into the Waffen-SS and enforce Nazi racial and political policies. Feldmeijer answered directly to SS leadership rather than to Dutch collaborators, making him one of the most influential — and dangerous — Nazi-aligned figures in the country. His most notorious role came with Operation Silbertanne, a campaign of retaliatory assassinations carried out by a death squad under Feldmeijer’s command. Dozens of Dutch civilians — writers, teachers, activists, and suspected resistance supporters — were murdered in cold blood as punishment for attacks on collaborators. Feldmeijer personally took part in several killings. Despite his fanatic loyalty, Feldmeijer did not live to see the end of the war. On 22 February 1945, his car was attacked by an Allied fighter plane, and he was killed at age 34. Even Heinrich Himmler mourned his death — but in the Netherlands, few shed any tears for Henk Feldmeijer.
