Willi Herold’s story is one of the most disturbing episodes from the final, collapsing months of Nazi Germany. In April 1945, as the Third Reich fell apart and discipline evaporated, Herold — a 19-year-old paratrooper separated from his unit — stumbled upon an abandoned captain’s uniform and made a decision that would turn him into one of the last mass murderers of the war. Putting on the uniform, he reinvented himself as “Captain Herold,” claiming direct authority from Adolf Hitler and exploiting the chaos to launch a brutal campaign of terror. With confidence, ruthlessness, and the fear that a collapsing dictatorship produced, Herold gathered a group of followers who believed, or pretended to believe, in his authority. Days later, he seized control of the overcrowded Aschendorfermoor II penal camp, home to thousands of Wehrmacht deserters and prisoners. There, he ordered mass executions — often selecting victims at random — and oversaw killings carried out with rifles, grenades, and even an anti-aircraft gun. Between 11 and 19 April 1945, at least 150 to 172 men were murdered under his command. As Allied forces advanced, Herold briefly escaped justice, attempting to blend back into civilian life. But his crimes soon caught up with him. Arrested by the British, he was tried in Oldenburg in 1946 and sentenced to death for 111 murders. At just twenty-one years old, Willi Herold was executed by guillotine — leaving behind a legacy of violence that remains a chilling reminder of what happens when absolute power meets absolute chaos.
