He then set the vehicle ablaze, hoping authorities would believe the charred body was his. However, Rouse’s plan unraveled due to witnesses who saw him fleeing the scene. The burned body was never identified, and Rouse was quickly apprehended. Despite his pleas of innocence, he was convicted of murder and hanged in 1931.
