Red carpet stylist and costume designer Alexandra Mann has opened the doors to her home on the Kent coast – and every corner is filled with eclectic secondhand finds. Alexandra’s ‘anything goes’ attitude is evident as soon as you step into her home, where she combines old and modern pieces with pops of primary colour throughout. In the galley kitchen – which Alexandra likened to a ‘caravan’ when she first moved in – is a £30 butler sink from a local reclamation site that once belonged to a school, and for open storage is a wooden shelf that was taken from the back of a church pew. The dining table, on Victorian trestles, is actually an old door. It might be where Alexandra currently eats dinner, but it was previously the kitchen worktop. The living room is probably the most eclectic of them all, combining gifts from friends and sourced treasures from auctions and eBay. There’s a slab of marble that cost £8 in an auction that’s stuck onto a wine box. ‘I’ve not really thought about it since, but it’s become the coffee table,’ Alexandra admits. You’ll also find a Victorian cabinet that houses her magazines and a chair from Spitalfields covered in rope. Alexandra's home is a lesson in resourcefulness and layering decor to create a lived-in, characterful feel. You'll also pick up some clever decorating tricks along the way, from using scarf curtains to disguise cabinets to repurposing an Art Deco glass light fitting that now takes pride of place as her bathroom sink!
