The race to Berlin intensified as both fronts closed in, with the Western Allies ultimately ordered to halt their advance to allow the Soviets to take the capital, as agreed upon at the Yalta Conference. On April 30, 1945, Hitler committed suicide, and on May 8, Germany formally surrendered, ending the war in Europe and paving the way for the Potsdam Conference, where the continent was divided into zones of occupation.
