The story of Ivan Marchenko—known to survivors as “Ivan the Terrible”—is one of the most brutal chapters of the Holocaust. Born in 1911 in the Ukrainian village of Sierhiejówka, Marchenko served briefly in the Red Army before being captured by German forces in 1941. Like thousands of Soviet POWs, he faced starvation, disease, and mass execution. Instead of perishing, he was selected for training at the Trawniki camp, where the SS recruited prisoners to serve as auxiliary guards in the machinery of genocide. By early 1942, Marchenko was deployed in Operation Reinhard—the Nazi plan to murder the Jews of occupied Poland. He soon arrived at Treblinka, the extermination camp where nearly one million people were murdered. There, Marchenko became notorious for an exceptional level of violence. Survivors described him as a sadistic guard who operated the gas chambers, beat victims with metal pipes, assaulted women and children, and carried out acts of cruelty even other guards found shocking. His brutality earned him the nickname “Ivan the Terrible,” a name later—wrongly—associated with another Ukrainian man, John Demjanjuk. When Treblinka was dismantled in 1943, Marchenko fled with SS units to Italy, later deserting and disappearing entirely. Despite postwar investigations and survivor testimony, he was never captured, tried, or punished. His fate remains unknown.
