Rudolf Höss, the long-time commandant of Auschwitz, remains one of the most infamous figures of the Holocaust—a man whose bureaucratic efficiency and unquestioning loyalty helped turn Auschwitz-Birkenau into the largest killing center in Nazi-occupied Europe. Born in 1901 in Baden-Baden, Höss grew up in a rigid, religious household before gravitating toward military life during the First World War. After Germany’s defeat, he joined radical right-wing paramilitaries and later became deeply involved in National Socialism. By the mid-1930s he entered the SS, rising quickly through the concentration-camp system. In May 1940 Höss was appointed commandant of the newly established Auschwitz camp in occupied Poland. Under his leadership, the site expanded from a detention camp into a central hub for mass extermination. When the Nazis began constructing Auschwitz-Birkenau, Höss oversaw the development of gas chambers and crematoria designed to murder thousands of people each day. He later stated that Heinrich Himmler personally ordered him to implement the use of Zyklon B as the primary method of killing. During the deadliest period—the so-called “Hungarian Action” in 1944—Auschwitz operated at full capacity, with hundreds of thousands of men, women, and children murdered upon arrival. After the war, Höss attempted to disappear under a false identity but was captured in March 1946. He testified at the Nuremberg Trials and later faced trial in Poland, where prosecutors confronted him with overwhelming evidence of genocide. On 16 April 1947, he was hanged at Auschwitz, near the crematoriums his regime had kept burning. His story reveals how an obedient functionary—focused on efficiency rather than ideology—became a key architect of industrialized mass murder, leaving behind one of the darkest legacies in human history.
