Élisabeth de Rothschild, born Élisabeth Pelletier de Chambure in 1902, was a French aristocrat whose tragic fate became a haunting symbol of elite vulnerability during the Holocaust. Though born into a wealthy Catholic family, her life would become inextricably tied to one of Europe’s most persecuted groups. In 1934, she married Baron Philippe de Rothschild, a prominent member of the famous banking dynasty, and converted to Judaism. Their union, turbulent and ultimately short-lived, produced a daughter, Philippine. During the Second World War2, after the German occupation of France in 1940, Élisabeth remained in Paris while her estranged husband fled to England to join the Free French forces. She was first arrested in 1941 for attempting to cross the demarcation line with false papers. Though briefly released, she was arrested again in 1944 for her charitable efforts to help deported Jews—or, according to another version, for insulting the wife of the German ambassador. On August 15, 1944, Élisabeth was deported to Ravensbrück, the notorious women’s concentration camp. There, amidst thousands of female prisoners subjected to forced labor and brutal conditions, she succumbed to typhus in March 1945—or, as claimed by her former husband, she may have been thrown alive into a crematorium. She was 43 years old. Élisabeth was the only Rothschild family member to perish during the Holocaust. Her death underscores the wide reach of Nazi persecution, which spared neither status nor name. Her children survived—her son Edouard died in 1984, and her daughter Philippine passed away in 2014. Today, Élisabeth’s story stands as a chilling reminder of how even those at the highest tiers of society could fall victim to Nazi cruelty.
