When the last Hogon passes away, the entire community gathers to choose his successor—a ceremony rarely seen by outsiders. Across the border in Niger, Islam has a long history, blending with ancient customs. In the town of Dosso, the people are led by sultans who embody both faith and tradition. One of them shares how his authority is woven into the daily lives of his community. Further east, in the vast Ténéré desert, thousands assemble every year for a dazzling celebration. Men adorned with paint and finery perform before prospective brides in one of Africa’s most vibrant and unique marriage rituals.
