Seeking refuge, they settled on a string of islands scattered across the Caribbean Sea. Once a people of the land, they became a people of the sea—adapting their way of life to preserve their culture and traditions. Today, the Kuna live on the San Blas archipelago along Panama’s coast, where their deep connection to the ocean shapes every aspect of their daily lives. Traveling aboard an oulou, the traditional Kuna canoe, they navigate between islands, harvesting the sea’s bounty and passing down their ancestral knowledge. But this fragile paradise faces a growing threat: rising sea levels inch closer every year, putting their entire way of life at risk.
