King Offa of Mercia is considered to be one of the most powerful Anglo-Saxon Kings to ever live. Styling himself as the first King of the English. After a series of battles and political masterstrokes, King Offa would become the most powerful man Britain, although we have no first hand accounts of his reign, only remnants of his past glory. What remains are clues to his greatness such as Offa's Dyke which was the construction of a great earth wall and ditch, or dyke, running from 'sea to sea'. The work required thousands of men, and each section seems to have been built by people from a different district and is regarded as one of the greatest constructions in the history of Anglo-Saxon England, reflecting his scope of power, wealth & vast resources. Historians often overlook Offa due to lacking source material regarding his reign. A key source for the period is the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, a collection of annals in Old English narrating the history of the Anglo-Saxons.
