Back in 2005, long before superhero fatigue set in and cinematic universes became stitched together like patchwork quilts of mediocrity, Constantine arrived as something of an anomaly. Directed by Francis Lawrence in his feature film debut and starring Keanu Reeves fresh off The Matrix trilogy, this supernatural noir didn’t exactly follow the holy scripture of DC’s Hellblazer comics. Gone was the blonde, Liverpudlian warlock scoundrel from the panels, replaced by a slick-haired, black-clad Californian exorcist with the haunted eyes of a man who’s literally been to Hell and back. And yet, despite this blasphemy against the source material, Constantine managed something rather miraculous — it delivered a dark, stylish, and infinitely rewatchable tale that has only grown in appreciation over time.
