Video Description

In the last of three programmes presenting profiles of postwar Labour Party leaders, Brian Walden examines the life and times of James Callaghan , who succeeded Harold Wilson in 1976. The last Labour prime minister, argues Walden, could not see that the party had to change to remain in government. Originally transmitted on BBC Two, 17 March 1997. Scheduled for 11.15pm, it was delayed as Newsnight was extended: this was the day the 1997 general election was called. The theme music is Violin Concerto in A minor (Allegro moderato) by J.S. Bach (BWV 1041).
