The liberation of the Nazi camps in 1945 did not mean the end of suffering for Jewish survivors. Many left Auschwitz, Dachau, or Bergen-Belsen as living skeletons, with no family, no home, and no country willing to take them in. Instead of finding true freedom, they were transferred to displaced persons camps administered by the Allies, where life was still marked by barbed wire, barracks, and uncertainty about the future. Hunger, disease, and desolation continued to shape their daily existence. Trying to return to their places of origin brought little hope. In cities across Poland, Hungary, and Ukraine, survivors faced hostility, rejection, and even deadly violence, such as the Kielce pogrom of 1946. Their homes had been occupied, their properties confiscated, and their communities erased. Europe remained a hostile continent where antisemitism outlived the defeat of Nazism. For many, the only option was to flee once again in search of a future in distant lands. Between 1945 and 1951, more than 250,000 Jews lived in displaced persons camps, where they slowly rebuilt communities with schools, synagogues, and Zionist organizations. From there, thousands emigrated clandestinely to Palestine —despite the British blockade— or to countries like the United States, Argentina, or Canada. With the creation of the State of Israel in 1948, many finally saw the possibility of a new homeland. However, trauma, silence, and loss marked an entire generation of survivors, forced to rebuild their lives on the ashes of the Holocaust.
