1998年，60歲的樊錦詩接任敦煌研究院第三任院長，1963年從北大考古系畢業後，她在敦煌工作了半個世紀，撰寫考古報告、保護石窟壁畫、構建數字敦煌。季羨林用「功德無量」評價她的貢獻。「如果我死時讓我留一句話，我就留這句：我為敦煌盡力了。」一席現場，樊錦詩與敦煌的半個世紀。 「明朝政府修了嘉峪關城樓以後把這兒一封，這一千年修窟的人走了，停了。留下來一共735個洞，4萬5千平米壁畫，兩千多身彩塑，一個藏經洞。」 「我還是講講敦煌，我自己的故事，你們去網上查查就行。」
