Big Estate Sale Haul! Came for One Item, Left With a Full Van!

Will this be a winning gambit? Our first stop is a few miles north of the state capitol in Olympia, Washington. Down a quiet forest lane is a big house with people milling over furniture, tools, and garage items… so we’re going to the empty kitchen to see what is being missed! Our hunch is good, as we pick up a $150 Fiesta tray set and a $75 Fostoria cake stand for just $8 each. An antique patriotic plate, Ken Edwards Tonalá pottery, a big cool biscuit tin showing the capitol building, and a 1920s print by a Wallace Nutting contemporary go into our fast-growing pile. We compare notes with two channel viewers who are finding their own goodies at this sale, then top it off with three $2 items that offer great value in some surprising collecting categories. Then we’re off to Shelton, a lumber town where an estate/garage sale ad promises more fun… but first, we take a slight detour when a barn sale sign appears! Way off the beaten path, we find a metal building where a seemingly perpetual junk sale is open, but we are pleased to find a fun red West German pottery pitcher and a Coke light shade for just $5. We reach the second estate sale to discover a mother-in-law unit in the downstairs of a 1960s home, where a long-time collector’s prizes are all awaiting us! A box of linens for $5 and a set of 1930s teal Depression glass for only $1 apiece whet our appetite, and the bargains just keep coming. Blown glass fruit in an Italian bowl for just $8, a Metlox Carl Romanelli bowl for $3, and Pyrex Charm casseroles in great primary colors all go to the counter… and then it happens! Suddenly, one of the women holding the sale recognizes me, and I’m escorted into the “off-limits” area to help with the things they’re not quite sure how to price… and get a sneak preview! We figure out prices together (including for items another shopper set aside), and a few of the hidden goodies make their way into my pile. Culver owl tumblers and a cool Polish Matryoshka-style house with dolls come to us… and there’s another big room left to shop! There we find bargain-priced lamps, a big old safe, bird figurines, and a Pendleton store sign, and they even let me take home a rack from their dad’s old store from the 1960s. It’s so much stuff, I have to repack the van to fit it all! Then it’s back home to unpack and look at the haul. We open the boxes of glass for the first time, spread out the dozens of vintage and antique wares we found, and talk about why we bought them and what the potential profit is when we get the chance to unite these things with a new generation of collectors!
