Central Europe or Eastern Europe? What is the difference between them? This region was once entirely divided between empires: the German Empire, the Russian Empire and the Ottoman Empire. Now the countries are members of the European Union and NATO and have strong economies, with GDP close to the EU average GDP. In this OSW explainer video we provide a definition of Central Europe with maps of the region. We also ask whether Ukraine can join the West and be part of Central Europe.
