The dog had settled on the bed, curled into a ball with her head resting on her paws. Her breathing was steady and deep and it reminded him more than anything else that they were safe. He sat closer to the stove wrapped in a warm blanket and listened to the fireplace crackle. These simple fireplace sounds mixed with the howling wind and together they became part of one winter symphony, a rhythm that soothed him, calmed him, and brought deep sleep relief. Sometimes he walked to the window to look outside but there was only empty white silence. No lights, no road, only the snowstorm night.
