Wines of this caliber are worth a special effort to find, purchase and consume. 90 - 95: An outstanding wine of exceptional complexity and character. In short, these are terrific wines. 80 - 89: A barely above average to very good wine displaying various degrees of finesse and flavor as well as character with no noticeable flaws. 70 - 79: An average wine with little distinction except that it is soundly made. In essence, a straightforward, innocuous wine. 60 - 69: A below-average wine containing noticeable deficiencies, such as excessive acidity and/or tannin, an absence of flavor or possibly dirty aromas or flavors. 50 - 59: A wine deemed to be unacceptable. Sommeliers, wine writers, and winemakers love to fight about wine. While some swear by bold, rich, fruit-forward styles, others are firmly in the camp of lean, crisp, and structured wines, highlighting just how divided opinions can be. And then some wines split the crowd right down the middle — bottles that some worship, and others despise. In this video, I’ll taste some of the most controversial wines out there: From the crowd-pleasing powerhouse Caymus Cabernet, to the supposedly overhyped Dom Pérignon, to a blue wine that looks more like a cocktail than a Chardonnay … and even a Rum Barrel–aged 19 Crimes. These are wines that push boundaries — of style and of taste. But are they misunderstood gems, or just marketing gone wild?
