Wines of this caliber are worth a special effort to find, purchase and consume. 90 - 95: An outstanding wine of exceptional complexity and character. In short, these are terrific wines. 80 - 89: A barely above average to very good wine displaying various degrees of finesse and flavor as well as character with no noticeable flaws. 70 - 79: An average wine with little distinction except that it is soundly made. In essence, a straightforward, innocuous wine. 60 - 69: A below-average wine containing noticeable deficiencies, such as excessive acidity and/or tannin, an absence of flavor or possibly dirty aromas or flavors. 50 - 59: A wine deemed to be unacceptable. Wine production is truly global — you can find vineyards and bottles of wine in places you might never expect. One such place is Brazil. Earlier this year, I tasted several wines from Brazil — a country most people don’t immediately associate with winemaking — and they caught my attention. I discovered that Brazil is actually the largest producer of sparkling wine in Latin America. Today, I want to take a closer look at the sparkling wines from a country that most of us tend to associate more with coffee than with Chardonnay.Lets go! The first vines arrived in Brazil in the 16th century, but cultivating them proved challenging in the country’s predominantly hot and humid climate. While the delicate European Vitis vinifera varieties struggled, hardier hybrids such as Concord, Isabel, and Niagara thrived thanks to their resilience and high yields. Even today, a large portion of Brazil’s vineyards are still planted with these non-vinifera varieties. However, if you look closely, Brazil also offers regions where Vitis vinifera can flourish. The country is vast, with significant climatic differences between north and south. Around 90% of Brazil’s wine production takes place in the state of Rio Grande do Sul — the country’s southernmost region, which borders two renowned wine-producing nations: Argentina and Uruguay.
