Wines of this caliber are worth a special effort to find, purchase and consume. 90 - 95: An outstanding wine of exceptional complexity and character. In short, these are terrific wines. 80 - 89: A barely above average to very good wine displaying various degrees of finesse and flavor as well as character with no noticeable flaws. 70 - 79: An average wine with little distinction except that it is soundly made. In essence, a straightforward, innocuous wine. 60 - 69: A below-average wine containing noticeable deficiencies, such as excessive acidity and/or tannin, an absence of flavor or possibly dirty aromas or flavors. 50 - 59: A wine deemed to be unacceptable. The wine world is constantly changing and while some of the cult wines, like Domaine de la Romanee Conti, Petrus, and Egon Müllers Scharzhofberger have a long history, others are more recent additions to the Olympus of the wine world. This “younger” breed of cult wines is often made by low-intervention vintners that developed as a countermovement to “industrial” agriculture in the second half of the 20th century. You must know that some of the old Cult Wineries produce large quantities – Lafite famously produces more than 400.000 bottles annually. Most of the new cult wines, however, are hard to get as they are being produced in small quantities. The wines that make your Sommelier salivate also often do not come from famous regions and are made using under-the-radar grape varieties. So today, I will taste some of the world's craziest, cultist, and controversial wines and let you know whether they are worth the hype—or not.
