Video Description
Hello folks! Today there is a big restoration of the Georgian broadsword. This blade is certainly not two centuries old, but it can be made a couple of decades ago. The name of this blade is "Kabiani hmali", i.e. the literal translation of a sword with a skirt, at first glance it looks strange, but this was the meaning and functionality. This type of sword appeared in Georgia presumably at the beginning of the 17th century, was widespread in the western regions of Georgia - Samegrelo and Imereti. This broadsword was used by cavalry. The "skirt" served to protect the body from the sweat of the horse. This is a good remark, but not to the end — my intervention is required. I say right away — I'm doing this for the first time, and I'm holding it in my hands. But where to go, let's start the restoration! First duty, I used a rust remover. Then, as usual, I washed, dried and oiled. After that, I cleaned the surface of the cord with a wire cord brush and immediately proceeded to the handle. Why? Therefore, this is my friend's wish. Do not sharpen or polish the blade. I had to sweat with the hilt of the broadsword. After 4 attempts, it turned out. I used beech wood. The rivets are brass. After the glue dried, I started creating the handle fittings. I made it out of brass sheet and wire. I tried to bring it as close to the original as possible. Of which there are 10—20 pieces left in the whole world. I applied decorative drawing and riveted the clip on the handle. I darkened all the brass in the old days. And moved on to creating a wooden scabbard. The scabbard of this broadsword is extremely non-standard, so they took longer than usual, which I do for a dagger. Upon completion of the scabbard, I glued them with natural thin black leather and moved on to creating accessories. I made it out of brass, decorated it with various elements using etching in iron chloride. I made the "skirt" of the sword from 3 pieces of leather, one thick from the boot and the rest from goat leather. I had to go to the tailor to have him walk me through all the details together. I decorated the scabbard with twisted brass wire and pieces of leather. I made a regular suspension for the wall. There is very little information about this subject on the Internet, and yes, I may have some mistakes, because I have never seen such a sword, they have remained exclusively in private collections and several in museums. After a few weeks, I finished it and finally show it to you. Thanks for your attention! Sincerely, Alex. Thanks for attention! Good luck and health to everyone! With best wishes, Alex!
