Restoration of an Old Uzbek PCHAK Knife — Careful Cleaning Process

Hello! Today I'm restoring a popular old rusty knife—a pchak. This blade comes from the city of Chust, in Uzbekistan. Its condition is below average: the handle is missing, and there is rust. But what made me happy is that the maker's mark has survived. Now I'm starting the restoration process. First of all, to determine how deep the rust is and whether the stamp is damaged, I used two simple materials: cleaning powder and baking soda. I also added some natural limestone, finely crushed in advance. After checking and lightly cleaning the surface rust, I realized that chemical agents shouldn't be used—the blade needed to be cleaned by hand. Cleaning the blade took me a couple of days. At first, I used cleaning agents, but then I switched to manual sanding. In the area with the stamp, I used sandpaper from 500 to 2000 grit, trying not to touch or damage the mark. During the process, I noticed the steel was very high in carbon, so I decided to cold-blue the entire blade. After rinsing the blade, I wiped it down with linseed oil and moved on to making the handle. I made the handle from natural materials—buffalo horn and moose antler. For the bolster, I used melted tin with a small amount of lead added. It was my first time making a bolster, but I think it turned out well. To create the bolster, I melted soft metal, then used thick cardboard to form a small mold around the tang of the blade and poured the metal in. Once it cooled, I shaped it with a fretsaw and a file. After finishing the handle, I began making the scabbard. I made it from dry linden wood, then slightly wrapped and stitched it with black leather—just like it originally was.
