Why is your upload speed slower than your download speed? If you have a cable internet plan, when you run a speed test your upload speed will be much slower than your download speed. Why is this the case? To answer this question, we need to analyze how internet is delivered with a cable internet plan. In a cable internet plan, internet is provided to your home through a coaxial cable. This cable is the same cable that’s used to provide cable television to your home. These cables and wires that your internet service provider (ISP) use to deliver internet to your home have limited bandwidth. As a result, your ISP needs to make decisions about how much bandwidth they want to allocate to upload and download activities. The vast majority of internet users require much more download bandwidth than upload bandwidth. To account for the internet behavior of their “average” internet users, ISPs allocate more bandwidth to download activities than upload activities. Before you get upset about this, you should understand that these are “data driven” decisions that your ISP is making. They are doing their best to make the majority of their customers happy. In addition, I’m willing to bet you perform much more download activities than upload activities when it comes to your internet utilization. This is why the bandwidth delivered to your home consists of much more download speed than upload speed.
